{"id":88,"date":"2017-02-02T17:58:59","date_gmt":"2017-02-02T22:58:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/kellycollinsaviation.ca\/?page_id=88"},"modified":"2021-03-18T21:19:32","modified_gmt":"2021-03-19T04:19:32","slug":"getting-started-in-flight-training","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/kellycollinsaviation.ca\/index.php\/flight-training\/getting-started-in-flight-training\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting Started in Flight Training"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-228 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/kellycollinsaviation.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1414-1024x765.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"478\" srcset=\"https:\/\/kellycollinsaviation.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1414-1024x765.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/kellycollinsaviation.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1414-300x224.jpg 300w, https:\/\/kellycollinsaviation.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/IMG_1414-768x574.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The following information is intended to answer the most common questions about getting started in flight training, and to help you to get the most out of the training process.\u00a0 It is applicable for persons training for the Recreational Pilot Permit, Private Pilot Licence or Commercial Pilot Licence.<\/p>\n<p>Please be aware that I am a freelance instructor.\u00a0 This means that <b><u>you supply the aircraft.<\/u><\/b>\u00a0 Please see the information on <a href=\"http:\/\/kellycollinsaviation.ca\/index.php\/flight-training\/aircraft-requirements\/\">Aircraft Requirements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Medical Exam.<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Prior to commencing your flight training, you must have a medical exam.\u00a0 This exam is at your own expense.\u00a0 The type of medical exam depends on the type of licence you are training for.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For the <u>Recreational Pilot Permit<\/u>, you must have a category 4 medical certificate.\u00a0 To get this, a medical declaration form must be signed by a doctor (any GP will do), and then sent to Transport Canada.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wwwapps.tc.gc.ca\/wwwdocs\/Forms\/26-0297E_1308-07_E.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Here<\/a> is a link to the Medical Declaration form.\u00a0 Your regular family doctor can sign the medical declaration.\u00a0 If you are over 40, an electrocardiogram will be required.<\/li>\n<li>For the <u>Private Pilot Licence<\/u>, a category 3 medical certificate is required.\u00a0 A medical exam must be done by a Civil Aviation Medical Examiner.\u00a0 The doctor has the required forms for you to fill out.\u00a0 After your medical exam is complete, the doctor will send the report to Transport Canada, after which you will be issued a Medical Certificate.\u00a0 This process can take 4 to 6 weeks.<\/li>\n<li>For the <u>Commercial Pilot Licence<\/u>, a category 1 medical certificate is required.\u00a0 If you are planning on training for this licence in the future, it is best to get the category 1 medical rather than the category 3 medical prior to starting your Private Pilot training.\u00a0 This will help avoid unpleasant surprises.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Use\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/wwwapps.tc.gc.ca\/saf-sec-sur\/2\/came-meac\/s.aspx?lang=eng&amp;l=124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this link<\/a> to find an aviation medical examiner near you<\/p>\n<p><strong>Books and Materials.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Before your first flying lesson, you should purchase your books and materials.\u00a0 This package contains all of the books and equipment that you will need for your training.\u00a0 It is best to purchase the materials in advance, as you will be asked to do some reading before your first lesson.\u00a0 Visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.vippilot.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.vippilot.com<\/a> \u00a0or another Canadian supplier to order.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">You will need the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Flight Training Manual<\/p>\n<p>Personal Logbook<\/p>\n<p>Pilot Training Record<\/p>\n<p>ICAO ruler<\/p>\n<p>Douglas protractor<\/p>\n<p>E6B style flight computer (mechanical or electronic version, or smartphone flight computer app)<\/p>\n<p>Canada Flight Supplement<\/p>\n<p>VNC chart for your geographical area (And VTA if one is available.) (Contact me for more info.)<\/p>\n<p>Flight Manual or Pilot&#8217;s Operating Handbook for your aircraft.\u00a0 This must match the exact model year. (May be difficult to find for older aircraft.\u00a0 Contact me.)<\/p>\n<p>Groundschool textbook such as From The Ground Up<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preparation for your lesson.<\/strong><u><br \/>\n<\/u><\/p>\n<p>In preparation for each flying lesson, you will be assigned material to read, generally from the Flight Training Manual and Pilot\u2019s Operating Handbook.\u00a0 It is <u>very important<\/u> that you read this material, as it relates directly to the upcoming lesson.\u00a0 This will make the lesson more meaningful. In addition, proper preparation is a very effective way to keep the cost of your flight training down.\u00a0 As you read the required material, write down any questions that you may have so that you may ask me at your next lesson.\u00a0 You will be discussing what you have read with me prior to each flight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Lesson.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Please bring all of your books and materials to each lesson, as well as a notebook, pencil, and a pocket sized notepad for use in the airplane.<\/p>\n<p>Each flying lesson is preceded by a review of the previous lesson, and a brief discussion of new material to be covered.\u00a0 Be prepared to answer procedural (how-to) questions about maneuvers learned during previous lessons, as well as to discuss your reading assignment for the current lesson.<\/p>\n<p>After the briefing, you will perform pre-flight duties as required, proceed to the aircraft and go flying.\u00a0 For a typical lesson, you will be in the air for about one hour, during which you will practice previously learned maneuvers, followed by new material.<\/p>\n<p>After the flight, there will be a short debriefing of items covered in the air.\u00a0 Reading and review material for the next lesson will be assigned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Payment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I charge my hourly rate for ground and air time.\u00a0 This includes solo supervision.\u00a0 I generally require payment at the conclusion of each flying day.\u00a0 I accept cash and e-transfers.\u00a0 No checks or plastic, please.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Groundschool.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t offer groundschool courses.\u00a0 You will need to sign up for one of the many available on-line groundschool courses.\u00a0 I will recommend several choices.\u00a0 It is important that you sign up for a Canadian course.\u00a0 Alternatively, you may sign up for a groundschool class at any flight training school.\u00a0 Being face-to-face with a groundschool instructor is preferable to an online course in my opinion.<\/p>\n<p>The groundschool course covers the academic side of your training, and is intended to supply you with the knowledge required to pass the final written exam with Transport Canada.\u00a0 You will learn about navigation, meteorology, regulations, aircraft systems, aerodynamics etc.<\/p>\n<p>It is expected that you will be doing flight training and groundschool concurrently.\u00a0 Taking groundschool with the intention of doing flight training at a later date is not recommended.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Aviation Language Proficiency Test.<\/strong><u><br \/>\n<\/u><\/p>\n<p>You will be required to demonstrate proficiency in English. \u00a0If your first language is not English or French, you will be required to complete a language proficiency test. \u00a0I will help you locate an examiner.\u00a0 The test is generally done over the phone.\u00a0 A fee is charged for this test.\u00a0 Students whose first language is not English should speak to an examiner for an unofficial assessment before commencing training, as some language upgrading may be necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Students who completed high school or attended post-secondary education in English or French in Canada are eligible for an informal test administered by the pilot examiner at the time of the flight test. There is no charge for this.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Going Solo.<\/strong><u><br \/>\n<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Average recreational and private pilot students will be ready for solo flight after about 15 hours of flight training.\u00a0 Before you go solo, you will need to have a <u>Student Pilot Permit<\/u>. \u00a0The permit may be issued as soon as you have met <u>all<\/u> of the following requirements:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Obtain a minimum of 90% on the pre-solo (PSTAR) written exam.\u00a0 See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tc.gc.ca\/media\/documents\/ca-publications\/TP11919E.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this link<\/a> for the study guide.\u00a0 The exam is done with me.\u00a0 I charge my usual hourly rate for sitting the exam.<\/li>\n<li>Write the exam for the Restricted Radiotelephone Operator\u2019s Certificate.\u00a0 See\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ic.gc.ca\/eic\/site\/smt-gst.nsf\/vwapj\/ric21-upd-oct-2011.pdf\/$FILE\/ric21-upd-oct-2011.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this link<\/a> for the study guide. \u00a0You will need to find an examiner in your area.<\/li>\n<li>Be in possession of a Medical Certificate or Medical Declaration (see The Medical Exam, above).<\/li>\n<li>Have obtained the necessary skill level to go solo.\u00a0 I will sign your logbook and training record to this effect at the appropriate time.<\/li>\n<li>Supply me with a copy of your birth certificate or valid passport to verify age and citizenship.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You will need to find a Transport Canada Authorized Person to issue the Student Pilot Permit. Most flight schools have one available. They may be able to do the radio exam as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Transport Canada publications you will need.<\/strong><u><br \/>\n<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Please download and print the following Guide<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>No Show Fee.<\/strong><u><br \/>\n<\/u><\/p>\n<p>Please try to give me 24 hours notice if you have to cancel your lesson.\u00a0 If you fail to show up for your lesson without advance notice or a Really Good Reason, you will be charged a $100 no-show fee.\u00a0 Weather-related cancellations are exempt from this fee.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Some Hints.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the best ways to save money in flight training is to be prepared.\u00a0 This means coming to your lesson rested, fed, undistracted and having read the assigned material.<\/p>\n<p>Another way to save money is to fly often.\u00a0 Several times a week is best, as recently learned material will still be fresh in your mind.\u00a0 If your lessons are weeks apart, a larger portion of each lesson will be spent in review.<\/p>\n<p>Take notes during briefings.\u00a0 This will aid your review time at home.<\/p>\n<p>After each flight, go home and mentally review the flight.\u00a0 Sit in a chair in a quiet place and visualize yourself doing the maneuvers you practiced in the air.\u00a0 Visualization is a more effective form of review than explaining the maneuver to yourself verbally or reading about the procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Many maneuvers that you will learn are procedural.\u00a0 You must spend the necessary time at home rehearsing and memorizing these procedures.<\/p>\n<p>Write down any questions that you have, and bring them to my attention at your next lesson.\u00a0 If you can\u2019t wait, please feel free to call me.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any concerns about how your flight training is progressing, please ask.\u00a0 Please don\u2019t try to compare your progress with that of other students.\u00a0 Each of us learns at our own rate and in a slightly different way from everyone else.\u00a0 Comparison with others is not a valid way to assess your progress.<\/p>\n<p>Since flight training is a hands-on endeavour, you will learn by doing.\u00a0 You will be given full control of the airplane very early in your training.\u00a0 It is important that you fly the aircraft as independently as you can, even though you may feel you lack the required skill level.\u00a0 I will not let you hurt anything and will guide you as required, but will try to fade into the background as soon as I can.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that YOU are the boss of the airplane, not the other way around.\u00a0 You are NOT going for an airplane ride.\u00a0 Fly assertively and positively.<\/p>\n<p>Do not neglect the academic side of flight training.\u00a0 Set aside time at least equal to your flying time for studying groundschool, preparation for the various exams, and the assorted knowledge areas associated with flight training that will be assigned to you throughout the course.<\/p>\n<p>Flight training is like acquiring knowledge through a fire hose.\u00a0 There is a lot of material to learn, and many skills to develop.\u00a0 Always allow sufficient time for study.\u00a0 Putting time pressure on yourself is a good way to become frustrated and disillusioned.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Flight Training Myths.<\/strong><u><br \/>\n<\/u><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u201cIf I log 45 hours in the airplane, someone will hand me a pilot\u2019s licence.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The truth:\u00a0 There is MUCH MORE to obtaining a licence than logging the required minimum hours.\u00a0 First, the average completion time for the PPL with me is 57 hours.\u00a0 (This is well under the national average.)\u00a0 In addition, each hour in the airplane is accompanied by at least another hour of pre and post flight preparation, briefing and debriefing, and yet another hour or more of self study.\u00a0 Then there are 60 hours of groundschool.\u00a0 Each hour of groundschool is accompanied by another hour or more of self study.\u00a0 So the mythical 45 hour figure has now become at least 291 hours.\u00a0 Add to this the study and preparation time for both the flight test and written exam, the \u201cfinal polish\u201d if you like, and the total time commitment is more like 300+ hours.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>\u201cIf I fly 2 hours a day, I\u2019ll get my licence in 23 days.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The truth:\u00a0 See #1 above.\u00a0 If you can spare 2 hours a day, count on 150 days plus weather delays.\u00a0 If you spend 8 hours a day training, count on 8 weeks plus weather delays.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>\u201cOnce I am ready to go solo, I\u2019ll just fly around and log hours.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The truth:\u00a0 All solo flights are supervised, closely monitored and occur at set times during the course.\u00a0 You will log only 12 hours of solo during the course.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>\u201cMy friend\/relative who is an airplane owner will show me how to fly. Then I just need\u00a0 an instructor to sign off my hours.\u201d\u00a0 Or \u201cThen I will be WAY ahead.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>The truth:\u00a0 Flight training time cannot be logged in this fashion.\u00a0 It will not count toward the licence.\u00a0 My experience is that this type of flying results in many misconceptions, bad habits, incorrect procedures and pet theories which have to be unlearned, resulting in a net loss rather that a net gain.
